basketball championship game
Special to the Star-BulletinKalaheo has come to take away Punahou's state championship -- but the Buffanblu will have a say in the matter.
Punahou, the two-time defending state champions, broke open a close game with Maui to win, 45-35, and advance to a semifinal game against Kalaheo in the Girls' State Basketball Championship sponsored by GTE Hawaiian Tel.
Punahou knocked Kalaheo out in the finals of last year's tournament and will run into this year's edition tonight at 8 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center. Waiakea and Kamehameha will meet in the other semifinal at 6:30 p.m.
"I can't wait," Punahou guard Milia Macfarlane said. "I wish we could play the game right now."
Macfarlane willed herself onto the court after sitting out Wednesday night with the flu and contributed seven points. Her team traded the lead with Maui 10 times before the Buffanblu scored the final 10 points.
Malia Durand finally came down from the recent three game stretch in which she dominated the paint, but her mates picked her up. Estee Okumura led with nine points and Caroline Ane and Christen Zoccolante added eight apiece.
Durand finished with seven points and seven rebounds, but will need help if Punahou hopes to beat Brandy Richardson and Kalaheo.
"Brandy Richardson is so versatile, she can do so many things," Punahou head coach Shelley Fey said. "We will need a total team effort on defense to win."
