Garcia leads isle surfers

Sunny Garcia, bidding for the No. 1 spot in the world pro surfing rankings, headed a five-man Hawaii charge through today's third round of the Japan Pro meet at Torami Beach in Chiba.

Meanwhile, Megan Abubo of Hawaii advanced through Round 3 and into the quarterfinals of the women's event.

Garcia entered the fifth Association of Professional Surfers World Tour meet of the season in a tie for the No. 2 spot with Australian Mark Occhilupo. They both won today to slip past previously top-ranked Beau Emerton of Australia, who was eliminated.

Other men's third-round winners from Hawaii were Kalani Robb, Conan Hayes, Shane Dorian and Ross Williams. John Shimooka was the only isle pro who failed to advance.
