Musashimaru in two-
way tie for first

TOKYO (AP) -- Hawaii-born ozeki (champion) Musashimaru and No. 10 maegashira (senior wrestler) Wakanosato are tied for the lead after each won matches Thursday, the 12th day of the 15-day Summer Grand Sumo Tournament.

Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani, drove No. 8 maegashira Toki out of the ring and also out of a three-way shared tie. Musashimaru improved his record to 10-2, while Toki dropped to 9-3.

Wrestling at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena, Wakanosato also moved up to 10-2 after defeating No. 14 maegashira Kyokutenho, or Mongolian Tsevegnyam Nyamjav, who dropped to 7-5.

Yokozuna (grand champion) Akebono, or Chad Rowan from Hawaii, pushed out No. 4 maegashira Aogiyama and improved to 9-3, staying just one win behind the leaders along with Toki, ozeki Takanonami, sekiwakes (junior champions) Kaio and Dejima and juryo Wakanoyama.

Takanonami beat western division No. 5 maegashira Tamakasuga (5-7). Kaio defeated sekiwake Akinoshima (6-6). Dejima bested eastern division No. 5 maegashira Tochinowaka (4-8).

Wakanoyama won out in a match with No. 11 maegashira Daizen.

No. 4 maegashira Kyokushuzan, or Mongolian Batvayar Davaa, lost to No. 3 maegashira Kotonishiki. Kyokushuzan is 4-8 and Kotonishiki is 8-4.

In juryo division matches, just below the senior makuuchi division, No. 7 ranked Hoshitango, or Argentine Imach Marcelo Salomon, was defeated by No. 2 Mainoumi. Both wrestlers are 5-7.

In makushita, the top junior division, No. 9-ranked Kaishinzan (6-0), or American Henry Armstrong Miller, beat Kato. No. 17-ranked Wakaazuma defeated Kotokanyu.

In jonidan, the highest junior division, No. 85 ranked Asashoyu (6-0), or Mongolian Dolgorsuren Dagvadorj, bested Chiyonotaka.

Wrestlers in junior divisions have only seven bouts during the tournament.
