McKinley ran through Seabury Hall, 44-32, last night to set up its matchup with undefeated Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Kamehameha in the second round of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Girls' Basketball Championship Tournament sponsored by GTE Hawaiian Tel.

As good as the third-seeded Warriors are, Tigers head coach Jesse Victorino considers it a blessing to send his girls against his alma mater.

"I thought that we were very lucky when I saw our bracket," Victorino said. "I think we match up better with them than any of the top four. They have been idle for three weeks, so they may be a little rusty."

Victorino didn't need favorable circumstances to overcome Seabury Hall (16-5) at the Stan Sheriff Center as his Tigers ran out to a 14-3 lead after the first quarter, in which the Spartans missed 10 of their first 11 shots. The early lead enabled McKinley (10-3) to overcome 27 turnovers - eight of them in their first nine possessions of the second half.

Punahou, Pearl City and Aiea also won yesterday to advance to today's second round and will face off against the tournament's top seeds today.

McKinley played the second half in its own backcourt, using the ballhandling skills of Amber Ehia and Tasha Haynes to kill the clock, sometimes a minute at a time.

"This was one of the better games we have played all season," Victorino said. "I wanted to see how the girls would handle this pressure, and they handled it decently. Tomorrow is the day we have been waiting for all year long, the girls all know how big a rivalry it is for me."

Punahou 56, Konawaena 41

With its leading scorer on the shelf and a key reserve battling the flu, Punahou managed to beat Konawaena to advance to a meeting with Maui tonight at 6:30.

Milia Macfarlane, who averages 11.2 points a game, watched from under a yellow blanket on the bench and Christen Zoccolante was held scoreless by the flu, but Malia Durand scored 23 points and added 10 rebounds to pick up the slack for both of them.

"Not having Milia was not a major factor tonight," Punahou head coach Shelley Fey said. "All of her teammates were able to step it up and do a good job. Tomorrow they will have to do it again; this time against a league champion."

Fey hopes she can get "a little bit" of playing time out of Macfarlane tonight, but does not expect her star will be healthy by tip-off.

Pearl City Charger April Atkinson drives for two in a
crowd of Nanakuli Golden Hawks: Lahela Romena,
left and Maricris Sierra, right.

Pearl City 51, Nanakuli 36

April Atkinson led Pearl City with 15 points and 11 rebounds to turn back Nanakuli and earn the right to play undefeated Big Island champion Waiakea (15-0).

The Golden Hawks closed to within five points with 1:45 left but were victimized by five turnovers in their final nine possessions. Momilani Monis scored seven of her nine points down the stretch, but it was the team's mindset that pleased head coach Alfredo Canencia Jr. more than any of the made baskets.

"We got our butts kicked by Kalaheo in the league tournament because we came out flat and looked intimidated," Canencia said. "Tonight we came out relaxed and showed the intensity and aggressiveness on defense that we will need to beat Waiakea."

Nanakuli	6	8	11	11--36
Pearl City	8	15	6	22--51
Nanakuli: Rosemarie Kelly 12, Maricris Sierra 2, Shyla Ulanca 0, Kori Montez 8, Ipo Keopuhiwa 0, Shaela Lew 2, Lahela Romena 2, Summer Victor 0, Mary Davis 0, Haunani Momoa 10.

The Oahu Interscholastic Association's fifth place team ran over Kauai's entry when Aiea (11-4) beat Kapaa (6-4) in a 3-point shootout.

Kylee Nakamura hit three treys in four chances and Kapaa's Ashley Farias countered with 4-of-8 3-pointers.

But Aritta Lane made the difference by leading Na Alii with 19 points and four steals. Keesha Aldridge added 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Aiea moves on to face the tournament's top seed, undefeated OIA champion Kalaheo (12-0).
