Police say Aiea mom tried to kill her kids
An Aiea mother has twice tried to kill her children, police say.Two boys, 4 and 5, and their 8-year-old sister are now in the custody of their father, while the 36-year-old woman is under a doctor's care undergoing psychiatric observation.
The woman tried to shoot her sons April 15 at her home, but was unable to get a loaded handgun to fire, Detective Gary Winterbottom said.
Two days later, the woman intentionally tried to drive her car, with her three children inside, over the side of the Kailua-bound lanes of Pali Highway, police said.
A guardrail prevented the car from going over the edge and into a ravine, they said.
The woman was treated at Castle Hospital, while the children weren't seriously injured.
After interviewing the children and re-creating the crash, police determined that the woman intentionally tried to drive into the ravine.
Police are pursuing two counts of first-degree attempted murder and five counts of second-degree attempted murder against the mother. The case has been presented to prosecutors for a possible indictment.
Police seek for questioning two good Samaritans -- a serviceman and a taxi driver -- who stopped to help at 4 a.m. after the April 17 auto crash, Detective Letha DeCaires said. Witnesses are asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or Winterbottom at 529-3852.

Legislature pegs money for Radford bathrooms
The state Legislature has appropriated $750,000 to Radford High School to fix its bathrooms, but it must compete with 249 other public schools for regular repair and maintenance money.Lester Chuck, Department of Education facilities director, said state lawmakers earmarked $750,000 in the capital improvement budget to repair Radford restroom facilities. Concerned Radford parents and area lawmakers this spring complained to the Board of Education about run-down facilities at the Salt Lake school.
But Chuck said today other repairs at Radford must be weighed against repair and maintenance projects statewide. He said reports today that the school would get an additional $560,000 over the next two years to fix other problems are premature.
Chuck explained that the department was given only $9.6 million a year for the next two years for statewide school repair and maintenance. He said DOE officials must first determine how much each district will receive before it can work out how much each school will get in repair money.
For example, if the $9.6 million was divided equally among the seven school districts, that would leave each with less than $1.5 million. It is unlikely Radford will get the full $560,000 it had asked for, he said.
