The women's first-round action was set for today and the luck of the draw pitted Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard and Megan Abubo against each other in the same heat.
STATE BOXING CHAMPS
Defending World Junior Olympic 112-pound boxing champion Samson Guillermo of the Waianae Boxing Club won his weight class title in the Hawaii State Championships last Saturday at the Westin Maui Hotel.Guillermo outpointed Brian Battease of Wahiawa for his 28th victory without a loss.
Guillermo will lead a team of 11 Hawaii boxers to the June 18-27 National Championships at Marquette, Mich.
The other Junior Olympic champs from Hawaii are Michael Adams, Wailuku Boxing Club (95 pounds); Brandy Pinol, Hawaiian Warriors B.C. (100); Dat Nguyen, Wailuku B.C. (106); Che Ung Aiona, Hilo (125); Robert King, Gold's Gym, West Maui, B.C. (132); Kawena Rosario, Waianae B.C. (139); Esmond Kapouiki, Lanai B.C. (147); Herman Marfil, Makawao B.C. WAHINE SAIL IN NATIONALS
The Hawaii Wahine will sail against 16 other top teams in the Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association Women's National Championships May 26-28 at St. Petersburg, Fla.Skippers Molly O'Bryan and Laura Rehg and crew members Ursula Austin and Natalia Tangalin will represent UH, which is ranked ninth nationally by Sailing World Magazine.
