Jeremaiah's Pure Hawaiian Pick.
Jeremiah's Pick, a premium San Francisco coffee, has entered the Hawaii market with the introduction of Pure Hawaiian. The coffee merges Maui and Kauai coffee beans. A percentage of sales will be donated to the Hawaii Audubon Society for the protection of birds like the i'iwi.
Pure Hawaiian, along with other Jeremiah's gourmet coffees, are for sale exclusively at Star Markets in Hawaii.
Along with Pure Hawaiian, Jeremiah's is introducing Hanalei, Hana and Kona Blend coffees, using beans grown on Kauai, Maui and the Big Island. These blends sell for $5.99 per pound; you bag it yourself.
The Hawaiian coffees are also being sold in California and Oregon.
The event will take place 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Shinshu Kyokai Temple, 1631 S. Beretania St., across from Central Union Church.
Dr. Don Purcell will provide information about osteoporosis; author Aunty May will give calcium-rich cooking demonstrations; physical therapist Sandy Pascal will present bone-strengthening techniques; and Alfred Blackwell will discuss use of acupuncture and Chinese medicine as alternative methods of treatment.
A painless screening system called the Dexascan will provide you with an instant assessment of your bone strength.
The next Health Date will be June 26, also at the temple. The topic will be obesity. For more information, call the Hawaiian Life Center at 536-1199.
May is Osteoporosis Prevention Month. National statistics demonstrate that at age 50, a woman has a 40 percent chance of experiencing an osteoporotic fracture in her remaining lifetime. Caucasian and Asian women are at higher risk of developing the osteoporosis.
Also at risk are women who have had a family history of fractures, had menopause before age 45, are small-boned, slimly built, who are inactive and whose diets lack calcium.
