Guv turns Eastwood
into a shaka guy

GOV. Ben Cayetano played golf with Clint Eastwood at the new Dunes at Maui Lani course on Maui recently. On the putting green he told Eastwood, in "Dirty Harry" lingo, "Eh Clint, feeling lucky today?" The guv, as people exchanged greetings with him and Vicky at Liberty House Ala Moana on Mother's Day, said he taught Eastwood the shaka sign, which the actor flashed to golfers and others. "He's a very nice guy," Cayetano said ...

'42nd Street' is a hit

WITH Wanda Richert, David Spangenthal, Devon Guard and John Rampage providing the voltage, "42nd Street" brightened Diamond Head Theatre on Makapuu Avenue Friday night. The vintage musical is a sparkler. Richert, who starred in the show on Broadway when it opened in 1980, and Spangenthal, another pro, were expected to deliver, and they did. Guard and Rampage were right on par with the visitors. The dance numbers by the cast and the costuming are excellent. The opening was a DHT fund-raiser. DHT boss lady Deena Dray tucked an Irish charm in a cozy spot on her person to keep the rain away during the smash outdoor bash before the show. Mug shot CHEF Philippe Padovani says he's honored to represent Hawaii in presenting great food at two black-tie galas in Japan for about 450 VIP guests. The dinners are part of the HVCB's Ohana Mission, and will take place June 1 and 4 in Osaka and Tokyo. Hawaii government officials, business execs and entertainers will take part in showing the Japanese VIPs what Hawaii has to offer visitors. Padovani's Bistro and Wine Bar is now open in the Doubletree Alana Hotel at the gateway to Waikiki. Padovani's partner is J.P. Damon ...

DISGUYZ kicked off its first CD, "Believe in Us," and showcased the band's talent and versatility Monday night at the Polynesian Palace. Calsen Aiwohi, Justin Alverio, Ian Ayson, Jason Lent and Junior Mika perform at the Palace in the "Yes!" review. Besides songs from the CD, the band sang harmonious Beatles and Beachboys medleys and drew applause for its sharp choreography. These guys are on the right track ... Mike Kaawa has a new CD out on Mountain Apple called "Hwn Boy." Catch Mike sing "No Ke Ano Ahiahi," "Hula o Makee" and other songs on the CD tomorrow night at Shipley's with bassist-singer Ocean Kaowili and see how well the CD title fits. Chai's opening is grand

KELII Kanealii and Barry Flanagan, better known as Hapa, helped make Chai Chaowasaree's grand opening of Chai's Island Bistro even more grand last Saturday. Healani Youn's hula was a joy. Chai, who also owns Singha Thai Cuisine, has the Aloha Tower spot tastefully decorated to give it the proper ambience for his Pacific rim specialties with a Thai twist. Starting June 3, Hapa will be at Chai's each Thursday ... That twin-engine copter at Ala Moana Center yesterday morning lifted the "fat oven" into California Pizza Kitchen on the top level. The new CPK opens in July. CPK has raised $16,000 for Muscular Dystrophy Association support groups and summer camp for MDA kids ...
