National honors for BYUH tennis
Brigham Young University-Hawaii women's tennis coach David Porter was named the NCAA Division II National Women's Coach of the Year yesterday.Petra Gaspar, a freshman on the BYUH women's team, was named NCAA Division II National Rookie of the Year.
On the men's team, Wei-Yu Su was named NCAA Division II National Senior Player of the Year.
On the court, the top-seeded Seasider women opened play in the NCAA II tournament with a 5-0 victory over Central Oklahoma at Pensacola, Fla.
Hawaii Pacific's men beat Bloomsburg, 5-1, in the NCAA Division II round of 16.
HPU puts three on All-West team
Three players from Pacific West Conference softball champion Hawaii Pacific were named to the NCAA Division II All-West Region first team yesterday.Freshman pitcher Jennifer Monzon, senior second baseman Jarnett Lono and junior outfielder Lyrissa Sagawa made the 14-player first team.
Hawaii-Hilo had two first-team selections, junior catcher Melanie Hipwell and senior shortstop Kristy Odamura.
Monzon was 21-1 with a 0.41 earned-run average for the Sea Warriors. Lono batted .393 and scored a team-high 37 runs. Sagawa batted .472.
Monzon, Lono, Sagawa, Hipwell, Odamura and HPU pitcher Susie Schoales also were named to the Pac-West's All-Conference team.
