Chaminade, Hilo split

Chaminade and Hawaii-Hilo split a softball doubleheader yesterday at UHH Softball Field.

The Vulcans won the opener 3-2 when Rayne Tomasso scored on Michelle LaRose's single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

In the second game, the Silverswords overcame the three-hit, no-walk pitching of Hilo's Lori Vasquez by posting two runs in the third -- one unearned -- for a 2-1 win. Kanoe Peralta stole home on a double steal for the winning run.

Rigg, Haine win Kaiwi

Mark Rigg and Marc Haine won yesterday's Kaiwi Channel Relay, finishing the 40.2-mile trek from Molokai's Kaluakoi Beach to Magic Island in 5 hours, 24 minutes and 39 seconds.

Cheryl Vilegas and Kelly Fey were tops among female paddlers, finishing in 6 hours, 55 minutes and 14 seconds.

Cooper surfs to win

Kauai's Paul Cooper maintained his lead in the BZ pro series points standings by winning the bodyboarding division of this weekend's Panasonic Shockwave Tour/Body Glove Surfbout XII.

Hawaii's Tyson Okazaki finished fourth in the event, with Kauai's Jesse Cooper and Hawaii's Edwin Nakazato finishing in a tie for fifth.

In other divisions, Tim Curran, of California won the men's surfing competition, with Kauai's Bruce Irons in a tie for seventh as the top Hawaii finisher. Australia's Yvonne Rogencamp won the women's title. Megan Abubo in third and Keala Kennelly in a tie for seventh were the top Hawaii finishers.

Five golfers tied

Clark Miyazaki, Ben Hongo, Brendan Moynahan, John Freitas and defending champion Mark Chapleski entered today's final round of the GTE Hawaiian Tel Hall of Fame Championship tied for the lead after each firing 1-under-par 72s in yesterday's first round at the Plantation Course at Kapalua, Maui.

Kerry Greenwood leads the senior division after shooting a 78 yesterday.

Friis sets pace in 5K

Christian Friis won yesterday's Cinco De Mayo 5K run, finishing in 15 minutes and 34 seconds -- 1 minute and 7 seconds ahead of Jason Noriega in second.

Heidi Ballendorf led all women runners with a time of 18 minutes and 20 seconds -- 26 seconds better than second-place finisher Jeannie Wokasch.

Vulcans sign swingman

Alan Thomas, a 6-4 swingman from Los Angeles Valley College, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for Hawaii-Hilo.

UHH head coach Jeff Law calls Thomas "very strong defensively."

Thomas was a first-team All-Western State Conference pick. He averaged 13.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game this season and was second in the conference with a 79.6 free-throw percentage.
