Groups weigh in on selecting trustees

The Kamehameha Schools Alumni Association has recommended that a nine-member citizens panel be appointed to choose new trustees of the Bishop Estate.

And the authors of the "Broken Trust" essay believe the probate court should appoint a committee that would set criteria and procedures that would be used to select new trustees.

The alumni association said members of the selection committee should be the president of the Kamehameha parents and teachers association, the president of the school, the president of a large private school, the administrator of a large charitable trust, the administrator of a major financial institution and four members representing the Hawaiian and community at large.

Four of five state Supreme Court justices have said they will no longer select the trustees.
