Hawaii
WHILE I was on vacation it was announced that Sally Sheehan will bequeath on her death $200,000 to the University of Hawaii to set up a scholarship endowment in journalism in the name of her late husband, Ed Sheehan. Since it doesn't take effect until she dies, no one is in a hurry for it to become reality. Now comes word that the philanthropic Mrs. Sheehan has pledged an additional $100,000 to establish the Edward and Sally Sheehan Endowed Scholarship in Nursing at UH. That's a subject Sally is all too familiar with now that she's wheelchair bound, lost her eyesight and is in the hands of a caregiver. Sally's late husband, Ed, was a meticulous writer and it was through him that I met author James Clavell in London and remained in contact with him until his death some years ago. Ed, a merry Irishman, must have smiling eyes these days in seeing his hard work turned to good work by Sally. She dictated to her caregiver a note of condolence on the deteriorating health of our mutual friend Simon Cardew, with whom I visited recently in England ... UH to receive
Sheehan giftHERE'S a bit of horrible timing over which Sports Illustrated had no control, but the week of the Colorado school shooting, Sports Illustrated had as one of its "Faces in the Crowd," a volleyball player from Littleton, Colo. who set an NCAA record for "kills" in a match where Long Beach State defeated BYU ...
Not a shaka
AFTER overseeing another successful "Nuuanu Nights" program Friday on Nuuanu Avenue, David Booth took off yesterday for Taiwan where he and his entourage will be promoting "Hawaii Week." Joining him will be Hawaii musicians, artist Wyland (who'll doubtless paint a wall, though not the Great One) and chef Jean-Marie Josselin of A Pacific Cafe. "Hawaii Week" commences Friday, Hawaii time, and the local group should be shocked to see billboards and posters all over Taipei showing folks giving the "shaka" sign, or what passes for it. But as Bob Zix (known as Kamasami Kong on the radio) points out, it's not the "shaka" at all, but an ad for ATT's new "IF" card, in which those pictured have their pinky and thumb expended, "shaka style," but meant to represent someone on the phone. As for Zix, he's in Taipei for the promotion and will be selling his Kona Connection coffee in the Grand Formosa Regent, site of "Hawaii Week." ...WHAT do D.J. Rodney Villanueva and a group of third-graders have in common -- aside from the obvious rim-shot gag response? He and some Kalihi Kai third-graders will be participating in the "Ono Water Taste-off" at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Wednesday, picking the best of various Hawaiian waters, winners of the past eight years all competing against one another ...
Mazie dotes
NEXT weekend is "Mother's Day" and who better to be honored than Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono, her mom Laura Chie and grandmother Tari Sato. The three are being honored by the Moiliili Community Center Saturday at "Applause! Encore!" -- a benefit dinner and silent auction -- at Waialae Country Club ... Speaking of which, it's "Maze Days" beginning next weekend at Dole Plantation, site of the Guinness certified World's Largest Maze. To kick off a-maze-ing festivities each weekend in May, there'll be drawings for prizes, free balloons for kids 12 and under who enter the maze, and each Sunday there'll be free concerts from 4-6 p.m. That takes care of Mazie, May's Days and the Maze, all in one paragraph ...
