ANAHEIM, Calif. - Jesus Salud rallied in the final two rounds yesterday to win a unanimous decision over Amador Vasquez in a 10-round featherweight bout. Salud rallies for 59th win
Salud, a former Nanakuli resident, controlled the first three rounds and floored Vasquez of Panama with a hard right in the first.
Vasquez turned the fight around, controlling the fourth through eighth rounds by throwing unanswered punches and cutting Salud, of San Diego, over the right eye in the fourth.
Although Salud's brow began to swell, he began to hurt Vasquez with right hands in the ninth and 10th rounds.
The judges scored it 95-94, 95-94, 96-93 for the 125-pound Salud, 35, who raised his record to 59-9 with 35 knockouts.
Vasquez, who weighed 124 pounds, fell to 11-3-2 with six knockouts.
WAC honor to Gentle
Kelly Gentle of the Hawaii Wahine softball team was named Pitcher of the Week in the Western Athletic Conference yesterday after beating San Jose State three times last week.Gentle, a senior from Australia, held the Spartans to six hits and two earned runs in 19 innings, striking out 14 and walking three.
Two of her three victories were shutouts.
Meister steps down
Punahou swim coach Jeff Meister has stepped down after 10 years and 16 state championships, according to Buffanblu athletic director Tom Holden.Since 1990, Meister's teams have won all but two state boys' and girls' titles. The Buffanblu swept last month's state meet.
Meister will continue as the school's associate athletic director.
Longtime assistant coach Kenneth Chew has been promoted to head swim coach.
Redlands scholar-athletes
Volleyball player Brandy Ching of Honolulu, water polo player Noe Brooks of Kapolei and tennis player Kim Oho of Wahiawa are among 63 students at Redlands (Calif.) who will receive scholar-athlete awards at the university's Honors and Recognition Convocation on May 14.All three women lettered in their sports and maintained cumulative grade point averages of 3.5 or above.
