Jamila leads Mid-Pac golf

Damien Jamila blistered the front nine at the Mid-Pacific Country Club yesterday with a 4-under-par 32 and finished at 4-under 68, leading the championship flight into today's second round of the Mid-Pacific Open golf tournament.

Jamila, the lone amateur among the first-round leaders yesterday, has a two-stroke edge on Scott Head and Jerry Mullin. Tommy Ukauka was another shot back at 71 and seven other pros were bracketed at par-72.

Robb in surf quarterfinals

Hawaii surfer Kalani Robb advanced to the quarterfinals of the Coca Cola Classic at Manly Beach, New South Wales, Australia, by defeating Aussie Luke Hitchings today.

But Shane Dorian and Sunny Garcia of Hawaii lost their fourth-round heats to Cristiano Spirro of Brazil and Luke Egan of Australia.

Hawaii's Megan Abubo and Rochelle Ballard have advanced to the women's quarterfinals.

BYUH men, women win

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's and women's tennis teams won their first-round matches in the Pacific West Conference-Hawaii tournament yesterday at Laie.

The BYUH men edged Hawaii Pacific, 5-4, and the BYUH women smoked Hawaii-Hilo, 9-0.

Hawaii-Hilo rebounded with a 9-0 shutout of Chaminade in the women's competition and the Vulcans' men's team beat Chaminade, 7-1.

The tournament continued today and will wind up tomorrow on the Seasiders' courts.
