Two one-hit shutouts
win WAC honor for Gentle

Hawaii's Kelly Gentle was selected Pitcher of the Week in the Western Athletic Conference for the second time this softball season after hurling back-to-back one-hit shutouts against San Diego State last weekend.

Gentle blanked the Aztecs, 4-0 and 1-0, for the 26th and 27th shutouts of her UH career, striking out 14 batters in 14 innings.

The senior from Toongabbie, Australia also was named WAC Pitcher of the Week twice last season and once as a 1996 freshman.

Wong, Hill second-team picks

Senior Michele Wong and junior Katie Hill of the Hawaii women's water polo team were All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation second-team picks and UH junior Karin Umemura received honorable mention.

Hill, a transfer from UC Santa Barbara, leads the Wahine this season with 64 goals. Wong is second with 44.

Hawaii defeated San Diego State, 9-7, Sunday to finish fifth in the MPSF tournament. It was incorrectly reported yesterday that UH lost the fifth-place match.

The Wahine will play in the Northwest Regional Qualification Tournament this weekend at Pullayup, Wash., for a berth in next month's NCAA Championship tourney.

UH sailors win regatta

Hawaii's coed sailors won the St. Francis Yacht Club Invitational with UH Team One and placed fourth with UH Team Two at San Francisco last weekend.

USC was second, Stanford third and UCLA fifth in the 23-team fleet.

Sailing for UH Team One were Josh Henrich, Terry Mott, Jeff Nelson and Malia Sharkey. On UH Team Two were Laura Rehg, Ursula Austin, Brent Harrill and Emi Tottori.

Four Hawaii surfers advance

Hawaii's Sunny Garcia and Kalani Robb won their Round 2 men's heats while Megan Abubo and wild-card qualifier Keala Kennelly of Hawaii prevailed in women's second-round action of the Association of Surfing Professionals Coke Classic at Manly Beach, New South Wales, Australia, yesterday.

Robb knocked off World No. 7 Mark Occhilupo of Australia and Kennelly eliminated Aussie Serena Brooke, World No. 2 on the women's side.

Advancing earlier to the third round were Ross Williams, Shane Dorianand Rochelle Ballard of Hawaii.
