Morris sees red
on birthday

HEAVY political hitters were at Murphy's Tuesday eve to help surprise lobbyist Red Morris on his 60th birthday. Sen. Dan Inouye, Rep. Neil Abercrombie and state and city lawmakers attended. Everyone was asked to wear something red. Rick Davis wore a huge red bathrobe that knocked everyone out. Jimmy Borges led the crowd in "Happy Birthday" and Genoa Keawe and her group performed. Maelia Loebenstein Carter danced hula. Other guests included Stuart Ho, Walter Dods, Jack Hoag, Jack Seigle, Joe Blanco and Councilmen Mufi Hannemann and Jon Yoshimura. Mug shot KAHAUANU Lake is faced with a big problem for the upcoming Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame concert he is producing because of the huge cast. The Wednesday concert at the Hawaii Theatre honors the Royal Hawaiian Band. Guest performers include the Kamehameha Concert Glee Club and Kamehameha Alumni Song Group, the Pualeilani Singers and the Ecumenical Chorale. ...

No fat chefs

Chef Philippe Padovani has joined Alan Wong and Jean Marie Josselin at the Honolulu Club for early morning workouts. Emme Tomimbang got the chefs to join the club and trim the fat. "It's a fun group," Philippe said. "When Richard Field saw me come in he almost fell off the treadmill. I call Jean Marie the commando. He's like Arnold Schwarzenegger. Alan is in good shape. And Alice Inouye, I can't keep up with her." Padovani holds the official opening of Padovani's Bistro and Wine Bar Wednesday through Friday. The sit-down dinners, at $150 per, benefit the Culinary Institute of the Pacific, Ballet Hawaii and the Academy of Arts ...

AN aloha party for Kahala Mandarin Executive Chef Markus Greiner was held Thursday at the hotel. Markus is joining Movenpick in Zurich, Switzerland. Mandarin G.M. Jan Goessing asked employees to describe Markus in a single humorous word. Sausage came up a lot, as he makes excellent sausage. Dedicated was a serious description. Another Mandarin chef, Wayne Hirabayashi, wed Yuko Osakabe recently ... Mari Frey puts on a luncheon fashion show at the Kahala Mandarin for Secretaries Day April 21 ... The male Sensually Certified Dancers, sometimes called the Chippendales of Hawaii, will strut at the Ala Moana Hotel's Secretaries Day luncheon April 21; $26 ...

Campbell Estate Trustee Dave Heenan will be at Barnes & Noble at Kahala Mall next Saturday at 3 p.m. to autograph copies of "Co-Leaders: The Power of Great Partnerships," which he and Warren Bennis wrote ... Society of Seven leader Tony Ruivivar says his brother, Francis, has leukemia. The family is asking everyone to pray for Francis at 3 p.m. on Fridays ...

The wrong VUE

Sales personnel at VUE Hawaii in Kahala Mall were puzzled by the large number of Japanese tourists shyly asking for something that they translated to be some kind of medicine. These were strange requests since VUE basically sells locally designed clothing. The mystery was solved when a woman clutching a Japanese Travel Book came in saying, "Husband, husband." There, in full color, was a picture of Herbal Viagra with the caption saying it is "available at VUE Hawaii, 735-8774." Please don't call," sighs VUE co-owner Judy Morita. "We have no idea how we got listed" ...
