United to start S.F.-Kauai service
United Airlines today announced a new service between San Francisco and Lihue to run one day a week through the summer. The flights, which start June 12 and run through Aug. 28, will leave San Francisco at 9 a.m. each Saturday and head back at 1:20 p.m. the same day.Joe Hopkins, a United spokesman, said the San Francisco service complements the airline's daily Los Angeles-Lihue service, which had been dropped by United in 1993 after Hurricane Iniki but resumed last June. Hopkins said the San Francisco service will use a 188-seat Boeing 757.
SBA honors isle entrepreneurs
Jon Martin and Lloyd Jones, owners of the Martin and MacArthur furniture and koa wood products business, were named together as Hawaii Small Business Person of the Year for 1999, in the annual U.S. Small Business Administration competition. The business was started in a Kakaako garage in 1961.The pair and other entrepreneurs throughout the state who won other small-business awards will be honored at a luncheon May 13 at the Ilikai Hotel Nikko in Waikiki.
State office warns of investment scams
State officials are cautioning businesses and individuals against fraudulent schemes being promoted as "bank contracted private placements" or "bank secured asset enhancement," in which the promoters seek anywhere from a few hundred thousand dollars to millions but say they have to keep the identities of the principals secret.A sign that they are not real is the promise of interest returns as high as 4 percent a week. Others promise a 400 percent return in as little as 48 hours, said the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs.

NEW YORK -- Shares of theglobe.com Inc. rose 34 percent today after the provider of online services said it would split its stock two-for-one. The New York-based company went public in November.
