The land of aloha will never be the same for Gina Arbogast.

Her younger sister, Eva Marie Rita Cosier, was killed in a hit-and-run car accident last year on the H-1 freeway. The driver that rear-ended her car was never apprehended.

"I hate being on this island knowing he's out there," Arbogast said.

With no leads in the case, it is unlikely an arrest will come anytime soon unless someone comes forward with information. Meanwhile, her death keeps eating away at her family.

"I haven't had any hope," said Cosier's mother, Clara Rita, 58. "I can't get a handle on how we feel. It's a hopeless thing."

Cosier, 33, was in a sports-utility vehicle with her newlywed husband, her mother-in-law and her nephew on Nov. 14. They were headed Ewa on H-1 when they were rear-ended by a large, older-model domestic car, police traffic investigators said. The suspect car had round headlights similar to a Chevrolet Impala or Ford Torino.

The sports-utility vehicle lost control and slammed into a guardrail under the Liliha Street overpass. Cosier and her husband, Gordon Cosier, were ejected.

Cosier, a waitress at Olomana Golf Club and a graduate of Castle High School, was taken to Queen's Hospital, where she died a few hours later.

"We miss her sense of humor and her love for life," Rita said. "She packed in a lot in those 33 years, before it was snatched away from her."

Now Cosier's family and police are asking for the public's help in apprehending the driver of the hit-and-run car.

"I think about her every day," Rita said. "I wish whoever's responsible out there will be accountable.

"We need ... closure. It's put a strain on the family."
