There are signs of change along Lualualei Homestead Road in Waianae -- lots of them.

The entire area around the road has been checked out, with replacement of about 50 signs that were either missing, faded or defaced, said city Transportation Services Director Cheryl Soon.

Work being done near Leihoku Elementary School includes replacement of a missing "School Zone Ahead" sign with a 20 mph speed limit sign, and repainting of a school crosswalk at the intersection of Lualualei and Hale Elua Street. A flashing yellow light will be installed there later this year and the school will have crossing guards, she said.

Wayne Oshiro, a resident who lives at the intersection, said cars have "banged my wall six times" since the late 1980s.

"My thoughts are that any type of safety thing for the school area and whatnot is a must .... " he said. "It's not only the school. It's also the neighborhood."

Soon said trees have been trimmed along Lualualei to improve visibility, and the Department of Design and Construction is investigating pools at the intersection with Ihuku Street, a few blocks away from the school.

At the intersection of Lualualei and Mill Street, the city is designing a four-way stop to go in later this year to enhance the safety of Waianae Elementary School students.

"Finally, we have gone to all the other schools in the Waianae area, and we will be replacing 62 signs that are either missing, faded or defaced," she said.

Crosswalks will be painted at Waianae Elementary and Makaha Elementary schools, she said.

City crews are doing the work except for the flashing yellow light, which is part of a larger islandwide contract, she said.
