Autopsy: Bishop lawyer's death was a suicide

An autopsy report has determined that Bishop Estate attorney Rene Ojiri Kitaoka died from self-inflicted carbon monoxide poisoning.

In her report, First Deputy Medical Examiner Kanthi Von Guenthner concluded, "The manner of death is, in my opinion, suicide."

Kitaoka, 39, was found unresponsive in her car, which was parked in a locked garage with the engine running at her Kaneohe home March 3.

The death occurred the day after Kitaoka and Bishop Estate trustee Gerard Jervis were thrown out of the Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki by security guards, who found them in a compromising position inside a men's restroom stall.

No alcohol or drugs were detected in an analysis by the Chemical Toxicology Institute of Foster City, Calif.

Jervis, 50, has been discharged from the hospital but remains under a doctor's care, according to his attorney, Ronald Sakamoto.

Homicide Lt. Allen Napoleon says police have received the autopsy report but have not yet closed the case.
