Hawaii's Shane Dorian and Sunny Garcia rode into the men's quarterfinals of the Rip Curl Pro surfing meet at Victoria, Australia, today and Megan Abubo of Hawaii advanced to the women's round of eight. Dorian, Garcia, Abubo
advance to quarterfinalsDorian and Garcia defeated Aussies Beau Emerton and Shane Bevan. Dorian will face fellow American Pat O'Connell and Garcia will take on Damien Hardman of Australia in the quarterfinals.
Abubo beat out Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard and Lynette MacKenzie of Australia in their third-round heat. Abubo will go against Aussie Neridah Falconer in the quarters.
QB Club speakers' lineup
Speakers at Monday's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon are: James Honkei, who is director of the Wahiawa Pineapple Run; Hardy Spoehr, who will present national high school interscholastic awards to 16 prep athletes, and Ken Wagner, athletic director and men's basketball coach at Brigham Young-Hawaii. Lunch at the Pagoda Restaurant is served at 11:30 a.m. The program begins at noon. The public is invited.
Tinman set for July 18
The 19th annual Tinman Triathlon is scheduled for Sunday, July 18, starting at 5:45 a.m. at Ala Moana Park.The event is made up of an 800-meter swim, a 40-kilometer bike ride and a 10K run.
Entry forms are available at most running and bike stores. The fee is $50 and the entry deadline is May 24.

UH men lose; Wahine sweep
Eighth-ranked Alabama defeated Hawaii, 5-2, in a men's tennis match on the UH courts while the Rainbow Wahine were sweeping Bethel (Minn.), 9-0, and St. Mary's (Calif.), 8-1.Antonio Garcia and Amandeep Singh, Hawaii's top two singles players, were the lone winners for the Rainbows (17-9)against the Crimson Tide.
Silvia Ricote was one of the standouts for the Wahine (21-10), winning two singles matches by 6-0 scores.
