A 17-year-old boy was killed and eight other people were injured in a two-car accident on Moanalua Freeway last night.

Two cars, both Acura Integras, were racing, Ewa bound, when they struck the median near the Aiea off ramp just before 9 p.m., police traffic investigators said.

The boy died when he was partially ejected. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Five people were taken to Queen's Hospital, where three remain in critical condition today. The other two were in guarded and fair condition.

Two people, an 18-year-old man and a 15-year-old girl, were taken to Tripler Hospital. Their conditions were not available.

One person was treated and released at Kaiser Hospital. Seat belts were not used, police said.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the accident.

The death is the 13th traffic fatality of the year, compared with 10 at this time last year.
