UH Wahine
topple Lobos

Dana Degen hit two home runs as Hawaii built an early 7-0 lead and Janelle Gonzales pitched 2 innings of scoreless relief to help the Wahine hold off 20th-ranked New Mexico, 9-6, in a Western Athletic Conference softball game at Albuquerque yesterday.

Starting UH pitcher Kelly Gentle also homered for the Wahine (20-10). The Lobos are 27-5.

San Jose State leads

The San Jose State women's golf team led Arizona by four strokes after the first round of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Rainbow Tournament at the Kaneohe Klipper Course yesterday.

The Spartans posted a team aggregate of 294 strokes while Wildcats were at 298. Host Hawaii was in 10th place at 315.

TCU's Susan Horton and Shannon Fisher shared the individual lead with Arizona's Krissie Register and Marcela Leon of San Jose State at par 72.

Desiree Ting led Hawaii scorers with a 75, which tied for 12th.

Makena pros win

Howard Kihune and Dugal Milne of Makena captured the Aloha Section PGA Pro Pro Championship yesterday with a 36-hole score of 137 at the Makena Resort's North Course on Maui. They shot a final-round 69.
