Punahou opens with
win over Sacred Hearts

Defending state champion Punahou opened the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls' basketball season with a victory -- and a scare -- last night against host Sacred Hearts.

The Buffanblu prevailed, 51-32, but needed a 16-0 run in the third quarter to subdue the Lancers.

Punahou trailed, 15-12, after the first quarter and "I don't think we still know what happened," said Buffanblu coach Shelley Kahuanui-Fey. "Sacred Hearts came out with really intense defense, mixed their zone and man, and pressured our girls. We didn't handle it well. Our girls came out after halftime and took control. Hopefully, we'll come back and take care of business (tonight against University)."

Chenelle Kealoha and Milia Macfarlane each scored 10 points to lead Punahou.
