French companies in battle over Gucci
PARIS -- French luxury goods conglomerate LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton offered to acquire all of Gucci Group NV if the Italian fashion group calls off its deal to sell a 40 percent stake to a French retailer for $2.9 billion. LVMH's offer for undisclosed terms came after Gucci announced today it had agreed to sell the stake to Pinault-Printemps-Redoute SA. Gucci said it would hold a board meeting Sunday to review LVMH's latest proposal. Pinault-Printemps' move for Gucci amounted to a slap in the face for LVMH's Chairman Bernard Arnault, who has spent the past month wooing Gucci.
