Hawaiian Electric Co.
Castle High School inspects its go-kart.

Go-karts race
Ford Island

Speed versus longevity will be on the minds of 25 high school racing teams Saturday at the fourth annual Hawaiian Electric Electron Marathon at Ford Island.

The race/marathon will have 25 high schools competing in an endurance run. The vehicle that makes the most laps in 60 minutes wins.

Drivers will need to find the right speed that will help them win the race and not use up too much battery power. "If you go too fast you're going to run out of energy and if you go too slow, cars will pass you," said Bruce Benson, HECO's communications consultant. "The car design also plays a big part."

HECO provided each team with a car kit consisting of the same parts and battery power. The design of the go-kart was left up to the teams.

Ford Island will open its gates at 7:30 a.m. with entertainment beginning around 8:30 a.m. by the U.S. Navy Band, I-94 and Chant. There also will be examples of electric vehicles operating on Oahu and cars from the Corvette Club. The race starts at 10 a.m.

Everything is free and spectators are asked to bring beach chairs or mats and sunscreen.
