Hawaii pitcher Kelly Gentle did some more home cooking last night on the Rainbow Wahine Stadium mound, firing a two-hitter in a 1-0 Western Athletic Conference softball victory over Nevada-Las Vegas. Gentle tosses two-
hitter as UH winsGentle, who is 7-5 this season but 6-0 with four shutouts at home, struck out nine and walked three.
The Wahine, held to four hits by UNLV freshman Geney Orris, broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning when pinch-runner Kanani Bona scored from second on Regina Ka' aihili's two-out single up the middle.
UH (15-9, 4-3 WAC) and UNLV (9-9, 3-1) play a doubleheader today starting at 2 p.m., with both games to be televised on KFVE.
RIEGER WINS PRO TOURNAMENT: Johnny Rieger of Ko'Olina won the Cascade Golf Tour/Pro Tour Hawaii Invitational tournament by three strokes over Jim Coleman of Priest River, Idaho, at the Hawaii Prince course yesterday.
Rieger shot a 3-over-par 75 for a 72-hole total of 1-over 289, earning $5,000 for his first-place finish. Coleman pocketed $2,800 after shooting par-72 for a 292 total.
Henry Sieradzki of Kaneohe Klipper was third at 74--293 and Jon Lindstrom of Seattle fourth at 73--296.
Pros from the Pacific Northwest joined Hawaii players in the tournament field.
ISEKI STATE AMATEUR LEADER: Takayoshi Iseki took a one-shot lead over Regan Lee into today's third round of the State Amateur Golf Championship at the Pearl Country Club.
Iseki had a 2-under-par 70 yesterday and was 1 under at 143 after 36 holes.
Lee shot 71 yesterday for a 144 total. Norman-Ganin Asao (71) and Damien Jamila (74) were tied at 145.
FIVE UH SWIMMERS IN NCAA MEET: Seniors Gregg Phillips and Jeff Stanford, sophomore Nick Folker and freshmen Eddie Lovell and Luis Rojas will represent Hawaii in the March 25-27 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at Indianapolis.
Stanford and Folker qualified for the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events.
They also will swim with Lovell and Phillips in the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relays and 200 medley relay.
Rojas is an alternate in the 200 freestyle relay.
ABUBO ADVANCES IN BILLABONG PRO: Hawaii's Megan Abubo beat out world champion Layne Beachley of Australia in their first-round women's heat of the Australian Billabong Pro surfing meet yesterday at Queensland.
Rochelle Ballard of Hawaii was second to Australia's Lynette MacKenzie in their heat.
No Hawaii surfers were in the four men's heats completed before the competition was called off because of deteriorating weather conditions.
