Working friends into a frenzy

In perfect weather, Kyle Chun can be found skimming the waters around the islands, trolling for ahi, opakapaka or other fish to be sold at auction. An avid fisherman since the fourth grade, Chun, his dad and brother often spend two full days aboard their 32-foot fishing boat and appreciate their profits -- anywhere from $50 to $400 for a day's catch.

On overcast days, the Leilehua senior still can be found around water -- swimming laps in his school's pool, riding waves on his surfboard, or practicing his water polo skills. Chun is captain of both the water polo and the swim teams.

But his talents aren't confined to water. Chun plays tennis and soft tennis, is a member of the hiking club, plays lead guitar for his ska band (Dummies Under Investigation), is class valedictorian and National Honor Society president, and has won several state-level awards for his science project on DNA analysis of akule populations around Oahu.

Chun revels in his busy schedule. "I'm a competitive kind of guy," he said. "If I sleep on the weekends, it's a waste ... Academics come first with me, besides family. If I don't do well, then I don't feel right with myself."

School counselor Glenn Arita described Chun as an "all-around good kid" with loads of potential and energy. Expounding on that, Chun said his next goal is a record of "songs that get people jumping up and down in a frenzy."
