Members of the Hawaii Civil War Round Table brought the
spirit of the past to last year's Historical Faire.

Mission House fair
brings past to life

They say you don't know a person until you've walked a mile in their shoes. But what if those shoes were a pair of 18th-century straight, wood-pegged brogans? The delicate footwear of a Victorian lady? The stout, saber-resistant boots of a cavalry sergeant? The bare feet of a Hawaiian fisherman? The sensible and God-fearing clodhoppers of a missionary?

OK, you can't know what it's like, but you can ask. Check in at "Ka Ho'ike Mo'olelo, A Historical Faire," an event created by the Mission Houses Museum to bring Honolulu's past to life, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday on the museum grounds.

Throughout the museum will be knots of historical reenactors who specialize in facets of local history. They include groups of ladies suffering in tight-waisted Victorian garments; an encampment of soldiers from the Civil War, a pewtersmith hammering his trade; a kapa maker; experts in caring for quilts, penmanship, genealogy, haku-lei weaving; tours of the historic mission houses and demonstrations of the cooking facilities, press and early American and Hawaiian games; plus a spirited debate of 1830s Hawaiian issues by Glen Grant and Bob Krauss, who remember it well.

Participants will wear "time badges" identifying their era.

Admission to the grounds is free. There is a fee for house tours and downtown walking tours; discounts for locals, seniors, kids, students and military. For more information, call 531-0481.
