Star-BulletinInvestigators today are analyzing dozens of pieces of human skeletal remains that a field worker found in Ewa.
An adult-sized skull, leg bones and a pelvis bone were recovered intact yesterday in an empty dirt lot next to a corn field, just west of Kunia Road. The property is owned by Campbell Estate.
The field worker found the skull Monday afternoon, but didn't report it until 9 a.m. yesterday, police said.
The remains will have to be examined before determining age, ethnicity and sex and how long they have been there. Other items, including a blue 1996 Pro Bowl cap, were found near the bones.
Police Sgt. James Causey said the items may have been owned by the person whose remains were discovered.
Causey and an investigator sifted through red dirt and recovered dozens of pieces of bone several yards apart. The land was plowed about two months ago, which chopped up some of the skeleton, an investigator said.
The bones were found in a flood zone. The last time there was flooding in the area was on Election Day 1996, Causey said, the same year as listed on the cap.
The person may have been carried in the flood waters, police said.
The medical examiner's office will determine whether there were any signs of trauma before homicide detectives are called to investigate.
