When her family's piano broke two years ago, Tracy Wang was shattered. An avid musician, she had loved to run her fingers over the well-worn keys and convert her feelings to melodies. There's music in her heart
The alto saxophone has since become her chosen emotional conduit.
Music, said the Sacred Hearts junior, "really shapes my mood ... Sound determines everything."
Ballads give her pause for reflection, while fast songs increase her happiness as well as her blood pressure. "I drag my brother with me even though he doesn't want to dance," she said.
Wang grew up listening to Chinese songs. She still enjoys them, but focuses more on perfecting her technique with the alto sax. As a member of the jazz band, marching band, elite Saxy Girls saxophone group and the Wind Ensemble, she gets in a lot of practice.
"She's one of our better saxophone players," said school music/band director Alec Briguglio, emphasizing that Wang is one of three top saxophonists. "She's very natural at it, but she's (also) a hard worker. She's very competitive."
Wang said she strives for the best in all her activities. She maintains a 4.14 GPA (due to Advanced Placement classes), is president of Vonta International, an international women's organization, is a member of the math club and Amnesty International, and is part of the Youth Advisory Board Coalition For A Drug-Free Hawaii.
