Monthly honors to
Collins, Ing

State wrestling champion Sean Collins of Radford and Iolani softball star Mitzi Ing were named Sportspersons of the Month of February yesterday by the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Collins, a senior, won the 135-pound boys' state title last weekend, finishing his prep career at 73-0. He also won the state 125-pound title last year.

Ing, a junior, pitched the Raiders to the state champion-ship, allowing one run in 19 innings and striking out 16 in the tournament.

WAHINE SOFTBALL TEAM RANKED: The Hawaii Wahine softball team was ranked 24th in yesterday's first regular-season poll .

The Wahine (10-5 overall, 0-3 WAC) received 108 points in the USA Today/Coaches Top 25. UCLA is No. 1 with 616 points followed by Arizona (594) and defending WAC champ Fresno State (587).

The only other WAC team in the poll is New Mexico (21-3) at No. 22.

Hawaii opens a WAC homestand tomorrow and Saturday against Colorado State (7-7, 0-0) at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

UH SIGNS FOUR SOCCER RECRUITS: The Hawaii women's soccer team has signed two junior college transfers and two high school standouts for the upcoming season, coach Pinsoom Tenzing announced yesterday.

Midfielder Nicole Costa and defender Michelle Edwards will transfer to UH as juniors from Ohlone (Calif.) Junior College. Both were Coast Conference all-stars last season.

The incoming freshman are midfielders/strikers KC Cornett, from Edmond, Okla., and Amanda Orand, from Salem, Ore.
