ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Cheyne Bloch
Baldwin swimming

The junior academic all-American and nationally ranked swimmer broke a 12-year-old state meet record in the 100-yard freestyle Saturday. Bloch also won the 50 freestyle and was part of two winning relay teams. The Bears finished second.

Shelley Tomita
Moanalua wrestling

The senior won her second state title Saturday, defeating defending champion Katie Kunimoto in the 108-pound final, and helped the Menehune to the team title. Tomita, the 103-pound state winner last year, finished undefeated in her high school career and will be part of the Hawaii contingent to compete in the national high school tournament this month in Michigan.

Girls basketball

bullet Malia Durand, Punahou: The senior guard scored 12 points in the title game of the Radford Tipoff Preseason Tournament to lead the Buffanblu over Kalaheo, 48-32.

bullet Traci Torralva, McKinley: The sophomore swing finished as the leading scorer in the FILA-Lady Tiger Preseason Challenge with 46 points. The host Tigers won the event with a 3-0 record.

Boys paddling

bullet Kawai Sylva, Kai-Heo: Stroked the Novice B and Novice mixed 0-6 crews to wins in the Toots Minvielle Invitational Saturday at Keehi Lagoon.

bullet Keoni Akaka-Reis, Keahiakahoe: Finished the season unbeaten in junior varsity one-man competition and was part of the winning varsity 0-6 crew Saturday.

Girls paddling

bullet Natasha Baldauf, Kai-Heo: Steered the Novice A girls and Novice mixed 0-6 crews to victory at the Toots Minvielle Invitational on Saturday.

bullet Mahina Enos, Keahiakahoe: Stroked the winning varsity 0-6 crew and won the varsity one-person race at the Minvielle Invitational.

Boys swimming

bullet Nick Borreca, Punahou: Won the 200 and 500 freestyle events to help the Buffanblu to their 38th team title.

bullet Caleb Rowe, Baldwin: Won the 200 IM and 100 breast and was on two winning relay teams for the runner-up Bears.

bullet Quincy Solano, Mililani: The sophomore finished his first varsity season with the state title.

Girls swimming

bullet Kim Ono, Iolani: Won two events (200 IM and 100 back) as the defending champion Raiders finished second to Punahou.

bullet Sara Sakamoto, Punahou: Won the 200 and 500 freestyle races and was on two winning relay teams, including the record-breaking 200 free team, to help the Buffanblu to their 39th team title.

Boys wrestling

bullet Sean Collins, Radford: The senior finished his two-year career with the Rams with a 72-0 record, winning the 135-pound title.

bullet Richard Robles, Kamehameha: Defeated defending champ Gerald Welch in the very competitive 171-pound class, winning 8-7 with an escape move with 25 seconds left.

Girls wrestling

bullet Val Busch, Waiakea: The senior successfully defended her 130-pound title Saturday.

bullet Donnell Bradley, Radford: The senior won her second straight state championship in the 220-pound class, pinning Waianae's Shawna Atuatasi.
