"I know that you're probably asking
yourself: 'Why would a brilliant, handsome, dashingly
omnipotent being like Q want to mate with a scrawny
little bipedal specimen like me?"
"Let me guess: no one else in the universe
will have you."

-- Q and Janeway, from "Voyager"

Quotable Star Trek, Compiled by Jill Sherwin (Pocket Books), $16

Non-Trekkies can't quite comprehend the enduring popularity of "Star Trek" and its many spawn: "The Next Generation," "Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager."

But fans know that each episode or film contains uplifting messages of hope and acute observations of the human condition.

Now, "Quotable Star Trek," compiled by Jill Sherwin, conveys the wisdom and wit of "Star Trek" with a rich mix of philosopy and fun. The book, available beginning March 9, is organized into categories such as friendship, diplomacy and simple pleasures, all ripe for repeating. Here are some examples:

Simple pleasures

"It's a song, you green-blooded Vulcan. You sing it. The words aren't important. What's important is that you have a good time singing it."
-- McCoy and Spock, from "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

"I would gladly risk feeling bad at times ... if it also meant that I could taste my dessert."
-- Data to Timothy, on the advantages of being human, from "The Next Generation"

The quality of life

"A man's got to live. And sometimes living is messy."
-- Jake to Nog, from "Deep Space Nine"

Human nature

"Where did your race get this ridiculous predilection for resistance, hmmm? You examine any object, you question everything ... is it not enough to accept what it is?"
-- Korob to Kirk, from "Star Trek"

In 1989, Aikane X-5 set a Los Angeles to
Honolulu Trans-Pacific record.

Racing 'cat' on block

The record setting racing catamaran Aikane X-5 is going on the auction block at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Snug Harbor, on the left side of Sand Island Access Road.

With a current replacement value of about $750,000 and appraised value of $265,000, the vessel is well beyond the means of most folk, but spectators are welcome to the auction. Also being put up for bid are some classic cars, among them a 1962 Mercedes 190 SL.

The Aikane X-5 was designed and built by Waikiki beach boy Rudy Chow. Between its launch in 1985 and 1992, it competed in 17 major ocean-faring races, finishing first overall 13 times, first in the multihull class 12 times and setting three course records.

The present owner, George Ashford thinks the Aikane X-5 could be used as a thrill craft for tourists. A business plan for such use can be found at http://www.x5hawaii.com.
