Chan charms kids,
dolphin

Mug shot NEVER send a Blowhard to do a man's job. In this case, it was Captain Blowhard of Whaler's Cove in Sea Life Park, a pirate who had the temerity to challenge martial arts expert Jackie Chan to a friendly duel. The kids in the audience loved the way the movie actor took to the dolphins at Splash U, and a highlight came when Chan was hoisted 20 feet into the air to give a fish to a leaping dolphin. Not even Chan can leap that high. He was so wide-eyed, he asked to do it again, and both the park staffers and the dolphin happily obliged ... Following his Sea Life Park show, Chan made an appearance at the Kahala Mall, pulling up in a limo. Following behind, almost as if she were trying to be invisible, was actor Rosie Perez in a sport utility vehicle. If these two are now an item, that fact seems to have been overlooked by mainland gossip writers, who ordinarily thrive on such things ...

MAUI rock quiz -- Two legendary rock musicians famous throughout the world each have beards and each have homes on Maui and each paint as an avocation. And in the space of one week, each visited the Celebrities Gallery in Lahaina to check out their artwork for sale there. So who are they? George Harrison and Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac ...

Flippin' description

I'VE no idea who came up with the name "The Flying Karamazov Brothers," but it seems an odd choice. After all, the men who'll be performing in "Sharps, Flats and Accidentals" at the Hawaii Theatre March 19 and 20 are not brothers, they're not Russian and there's no trapeze in their act. They probably have never even heard of Leo Tolstoy, who as you know wrote, "The Brothers Cazimero" or something like that. Incidentally, the Cazimeros, who are brothers, were such a big hit at Don Ho's Island Grill that they've been signed to do two more shows there Saturday. Last Saturday the place was filled to the max ...

American Association of Retired Persons, or AARP, the organization designed for both retired folks and those getting old enough to retire, has for the first time opened an office in Hawaii. Eileen Mortenson is the organization's first staffer, odd since there are 128,000 AARP members in Hawaii, all but 8,000 of them on Oahu ...

YOU often see a lot of good-looking birds at Carelli's on the Beach on Maui, but over the weekend there were some new ones in the house and they were so tasty they appeared on the menu. You often hear of fishermen bringing their catch into a restaurant but in this case it was four hunters from Montana who hauled in quail and pheasant they'd caught on the slopes of Haleakala. Chef Mauro Gramuglia happily prepared the birds Italian style ...

Lapping up the luxury

SO you own a string of five-star hotels around the world, and can have your sales meeting anywhere you want. Where do you go? Well, in the case of the Luxury Collection of Starwood, the company chose Hawaii. They brought in sales representatives from all over the world to get a taste of luxury, Hawaiian style, at the Orchid at Mauna Lani, Princeville, Lanai and the Royal Hawaiian. The company has more luxury hotels in Hawaii than anywhere else except Italy, and local Starwood Hawaii honcho Keith Vieira plans on adding more ...
