soccer tournamentWAILUKU -- Moanalua, Castle, Pearl City and Hilo won tight first-round matches yesterday in the quarterfinals of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts HHSAA State Soccer Championship Tournament.
In today's quarterfinals, Moanalua meets top-seeded Mililani, Hilo goes against No. 2 Punahou, Castle tackles No. 3 Baldwin and Pearl City faces No. 4 Waiakea.
Yesterday at War Memorial Stadium, Moanalua edged Waimea, 2-1, in double-overtime; Hilo shaded Aiea, 2-1; Castle got past Hawaii Prep, 2-1, and Pearl City defeated Iolani, 3-2.
Moanalua 2, Waimea 1: Ryan Abe scored the winning goal for the Menehunes off a rebound 25 seconds into the second overtime session.
Donovan Agan put Waimea up. 1-0, at 33:55 of the first half, but Liko Kruse tied it for Moanalua at the 61:40 mark.
Hilo 2, Aiea 1: Aaron Auna scored his second goal of the match in the 60th minute of play, carrying the Vikings past Na Alii.
Castle 2, Hawaii Prep 1: Early goals by Aven Moratin and Bryson Yamashita stood up for the Knights.
Moratin scored at 12:35 and Yamashita at 14:00.
Kraig Hynes scored at 69:15 for Hawaii Prep.
Pearl City 3, Iolani 2: Christopher Knight shot the Chargers past the Raiders, breaking a 2-2 tie with less than 15 minutes to play.
