seeds cruise
Kalaheo and Punahou advance,
By Cindy Luis
but No. 4 Maui falls
to St. Louis
Star-BulletinKalaheo and Punahou were on cruise control last night in their respective quarterfinal victories at the Stan Sheriff Center. The top two seeds now anticipate needing to find another gear in their semifinal games tonight in the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Boys' Basketball State Tournament.
No. 1 Kalaheo (13-0) ran out to a 22-5 lead against Castle en route to a 59-36 win last night. The Mustangs will take on a physical St. Louis team that upset fourth-seeded Maui, 53-47.
Second-seeded Punahou (12-1) scored the game's first 13 points in steamrolling Kapaa, 69-31. The Buffanblu will face No. 3 seed Waiakea, which held off Kalani, 85-75.
"When you get this far, you expect to play somebody tough," said Kalaheo coach Pete Smith, whose team beat St. Louis, 45-35, in the third-place game of the Walter Wong Invitational on Dec. 30. "We have played Punahou, St. Louis and Waiakea (in the preseason) and I thought this would be the final four.
"Any one of the four can win this. It will depend on who plays well the next two nights."
Punahou 69, Kapaa 31: The Buffanblu hadn't played in 12 days, but it didn't take long for them to work out the kinks. Punahou outscored the Warriors, 27-7, in the opening eight minutes in keeping their drive for an eighth state title alive.
Senior center Brandon Brooks dominated with 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and three blocks.
Senior guard Zach Stephens added 14 points.
"I'm really happy for him," said Punahou coach Alan Lum. "He's been often overlooked with Brandon and Steve (Gilliam, a fifth-year senior who is ineligible for the tournament) out there."
Nick Hill led Kapaa (7-4) with 12 points.
Kalaheo 59, Castle 36: Junior forward Julian Sensley recorded his 18th double-double of the season, finishing with 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Mustangs over the Knights (9-6).
The win sets up a rematch of last year's state semifinal with St. Louis, won by Kalaheo.
"St. Louis is physical, and the matchup with them is just as tough as Punahou, sizewise," said Smith. "We just need to play our game."
Waiakea 85, Kalani 75: Senior center Kyle Bartholomew scored 33 points and the third-seeded Warriors (14-1) held off a furious late rally by the Falcons (10-4).Trailing, 60-40, near the end of the third quarter, Kalani went on a 19-2 run to close to 62-59 with four minutes left. Myron Yoshizumi scored six of his 17 points to help Waiakea take control with an 11-0 spurt.
The Falcons hit 15 3-pointers in their losing effort. Everett Frye sank six en route to his team-high 26 points.
St. Louis 53, Maui 47: Senior forward Matt Vivas scored 21 points as the Crusaders (12-4) upset the fourth-seeded Sabers (15-2).
Junior guard Junior Wong added 14 points. Senior forward Ikaika-Li Woods led Maui with 14 points.
Iolani 63, Kohala 56 (OT): Senior guard Doug Jackson scored 28 points and hit 5 of 6 free throws in overtime as the Raiders (10-4) eliminated the Cowboys (12-4).
Jackson also had five steals for the defending state champs, who will play for the consolation championship tomorrow against the winner of today's game between Waianae and Lahainaluna.
