To Tui, his wife, Diane, and their son, Tavana. My car broke down before the Wahiawa exit about 5:30 p.m. Jan. 30. My cellular phone had died, so I walked to Wahiawa, stopping at the first grocery shop, told them my plight and asked to use the phone. They said no, pointing to a pay phone two blocks away.A young female was using that phone. After a few minutes, I asked if she was going to be long. She nodded yes. I explained my plight, asking to use the phone for a few moments. She turned her back on me. I walked to the next open place, Western Union, where a nice woman let me use the phone, warning I had to leave by 6 p.m. or the alarm would go off. I called two places with tow trucks with no luck before being told I had to leave. It was raining as I next walked to McDonald's. It was closed.
I stood there in disbelief. Someone told me a new McDonald's was in back. As I started walking, wet and feeling quite sorry for myself, Tui and Tavana came up and offered a ride. They had seen me when my car broke down. When they saw me again, his wife told Tui to help me. He towed my car to a Chevron station and offered to take me home to Waialua. My car was repaired, so I did not need a ride. I want them all to know how very much I appreciated their kindness. -- Marilyn Schoenke
To Richard Pascua, assistant manager of Foodland Super Market in Liliha, and clerk Clint Tom. My husband unwittingly locked our 2-year-old granddaughter in his car on Jan. 25. Mr. Pascua insisted on driving him home to get his spare key while Mr. Tom played with my granddaughter, making her laugh. Her parents and we are so very grateful that they went that extra mile. -- Eleanor Chung
To Wackenhut security officer Antonio Bello, who helped when I had flat tire at Honolulu Airport Jan. 29. -- Ron Q.
To Glenn and Geri Chun, for helping two seniors. After shopping in Chinatown on Jan. 31, we were unable to find our car in a parking garage and were getting desperate. While talking with them, we realized we were in the wrong garage! -- J. & E.
To Teini and her staff at Island Magnets at Ala Moana Center. When I left my wallet there on Feb. 2, she tracked me down. -- Betty
To Carl Yoshida, for helping two senior citizens when we had a flat tire on Ward Avenue on Feb. 1. -- Mrs. Goto
To Mrs. Ed Wise and her granddaughter, who took care of me until my daughter-in-law came and took me home when I got sick during the DAV Christmas party. -- E.A.K.
To a father and son who showed what's really important in life. At a recent ILH junior varsity basketball game, we realized that one player was the son of the coach of the other team. At the end they embraced, showing that competition can be very fierce, but that love is the final reward. It was something we all felt privileged to see. -- No name
To the garbage man who goes beyond the call of duty and picks up a ton of trash left at the Keehi Boat Harbor Dumpsters by non-Keehi residents. Nowadays, too many people would say, "It's not my job." -- Harry Abbot, Keehi Boat Harbor
To Panny. Your expert advice was right on the kini popo when my car stalled on the H-1 near the Aiea cutoff. -- B.C.S.
To Dr. Gregory Herbich. I was badly bitten by dogs and rushed to a hospital emergency room. Doctors there wouldn't stitch me up, so I had to look in the Yellow Pages and found Dr. Herbich, who kindly took care of me after hours. -- Monica
