Evans scores 34,
By Jerry Campany
but BYUH falls to
Sea Warriors
Special to the Star-BulletinDavid Evans scored 34 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Brigham Young University-Hawaii but was overshadowed by Hawaii Pacific's collection of athletes in an 80-71 loss last night.
"I've never seen Evans have a bad game against us; he always seems to score at least 30," Hawaii Pacific head coach Tony Sellitto said. "But scorers -- even great ones -- don't win games; teams win games."
The Seasiders (12-11, 6-5 PacWest) took advantage of the Sea Warriors' poor shooting to run out to an early seven-point lead.
They led until Stacey Nolan, who finished with 20 points, threw down a reverse dunk with less than a minute left in the half. The Sea Warriors (17-6, 10-1) rode that momentum to a 35-32 halftime lead.
The teams battled evenly for the first five minutes of the second half, and then abandoned defense in favor of a frantic running game. Evans paced the Seasiders over the next six minutes, scoring all 15 of his team's points over the stretch while hitting a shot each time down the floor.
The Sea Warriors matched the Seasiders basket for basket by taking advantage of a tired, cheating defense. Hawaii Pacific point guard Shannon Lee picked apart BYUH, repeatedly finding the open man.
"I have played against them a long time," Lee said. "It gets easy to adjust to their defense."
Evans had 32 points when he picked up his fourth foul with seven minutes left, and a Seasider team that committed 26 turnovers to HPU's nine couldn't cope without him at full strength.
"David had a good offensive night," BYUH head coach Ken Wagner said. "But it takes more than that to win."
Chaminade 94, Hawaii-Hilo 75: At McCabe Gym, the Silverswords (12-11, 6-5 PacWest) continued their march toward a playoff berth by trouncing the Vulcans (6-17, 2-9).
Derek Tracy scored 22 points to lead four Silverswords.
Merriel Jenkins led Hilo with 20.
