Sweet songs for
Feb. 14

Mug shot DESPERATE to get your sweetie something for Valentine's Day, but can't be bothered shopping? Here's a suggestion: Call the singing Valentine people and arrange for a quartet of men or women -- your choice -- to serenade your Valentine with two romantic songs, a silk rose or balloon and a personalized Valentine. You don't even have to be there. The singers are from Na Leo Lani, local chapter of the Sweet Adelines, and the Sounds of Aloha Chorus. Total cost: $40. To make a booking for Friday, Saturday or Sunday, call Joan Michaels at 524-1903 ...

DA Tita, Melveen Leed, is flying in from her Tahiti home to headline the Aloha Friday Luncheon Show at the P.K.'s Pikake Terrace Friday to salute Valentine's Day. Sharing stage with "Da Tita" will be the Society of Seven, Cathy Foy and O'Brien Eselu. Emcees for the show will be Frank B. Shaner and Brickwood Galuteria, the D.J. Moe Keale always calls "Driftwood Cafeteria." Or as one observer put it, "His name sounds like a hippie mall" ...

HAVE you caught the Hertz commercial on TV in which a young woman identified as "Jane Carlson" beats another traveler to her rent-a-car because of perks she receives by using Hertz? And the name of the guy in the spot she beats, who's using another company, is "Bill Williams." That comes as something of a shock to Hawaii viewers since Bill Williams is Mr. Hertz in the islands, often called the "Superstar in Rent-a-Car" ...

Paleoanthropology 101

HERE'S the perfect opportunity to get a primer on early evolution of mankind -- or in this case, womankind -- and do so in luxury. Dr. Donald Johanson will be speaking at the Lodge at Koele Saturday night. He's the paleoanthropologist who discovered a hominid skeleton in Ethiopia he called "Lucy," and wrote the American Book Award-winning "Lucy" a few years back. Besides running the Institute of Human Origins at Arizona State University, Dr. Johanson was host and narrator of the frequently aired 3-part PBS/NOVA series, "In Search of Human Origins," seen by more than 100 million viewers worldwide. At Lanai, Dr. Johanson will show slides and share stories dealing with his years of research in Ethiopia since the early 1970s ...

CARPAL tunnel syndrome affects more than merely people who type a lot. Lisa Leung, who plays fiddle with Irish Hearts, has to lay off playing for a time due to the dreaded ailment setting in ... Localite Dorothy Hazzard is proud of her daughter, Elaine Meredith Hazzard, who is one of four playwrights having their work produced at the Studio Theater in New York. The grand opening is tonight, and all of the plays deal with baseball. Hazzard's is called "Diamonds" ... While Manoa Valley Theatre is in rehearsals for "Kiss of the Spider Woman," the mainland-based dance and illusion company called Momix is preparing a piece it'll be showing Feb. 19 & 20 at the Hawaii Theater. It's called "Kiss Off Spider Woman." Incidentally, Rhonda, the mono-monikered New Zealand singer, is in the MVT production along with her son, Scott ...

New Year's Eve already?

THE Korbel Champagne people, noting that it's less than 11 months until New Year's Eve -- and not just any New Year's Eve, but the one leading to the next millennium -- is celebrating already. M&S Brokerage boss Mark Milton will be holding a New Year's Eve Party Feb. 17 at the Royal Hawaiian and no doubt warning everyone they should stock up on the bubbly now, lest they run out. Fat chance! ...
