EL PASO, Texas -- The University of Hawaii women's basketball team filled one big order and have one tall order left to handle on its two-game road trip.

Taking control of the game with a 9-0 run midway through the second half, the Wahine defeated Texas-El Paso, 77-64, in a Western Athletic Conference Pacific Division game last night.

"We had a timeout and our players said it was time to get it over with," UH head coach Vince Goo said. "We went to a pressure man (defense) and cut off the baseline. We knew if we did a good job defensively, we could score."

The timeout came with 9:45 to play and UH had just started its run and led 52-46. Five minutes later the Wahine (13-7, 5-3 WAC) were up, 65-52. They converted 8-of-12 free throws in the wanning moments to hold off the Miners (8-12, 2-6).

Raylene Howard led UH with 28 points and 10 rebounds. BJ Itoman followed with 18 points.

There was concern for UTEP's 3-point shooting, but the Wahine held the Miners to just 3-for-12 in that department.

"Our perimeter people did the pressing and the inside people, especially Hedy (Liu), were rotating and helping out," Goo said.

"BJ played a great floor game offensively and, as usual, at the defensive end. She's had just one turnover in the last two games."

Next up is Sunday's visit to The Pit for a rematch with New Mexico, a five-point winner over UH in Honolulu on Jan. 9.
