UH tops Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. -- The Hawaii men's volleyball team served for the match twice last night against Stanford, needing 60 minutes between serves to finally put away the Cardinal.

In a reversal of Thursday's outcome, it was the Rainbows who prevailed in five at Maples Pavilion, 15-8, 15-11, 14-16, 11-15, 16-14. Torry Tukuafu had 29 kills and Dejan Miladinovic was in on 13 blocks as No. 4 Hawaii improved to 5-2 overall, 3-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

"To be able to come out with a split with Stanford is OK with us," said Hawaii coach Mike Wilton after the 2-hour, 54-minute match. "Winning both here was do-able but we didn't get it done. This was a good character check for us."

Hawaii's Jorge Alifonso served aloha ball at 14-12 in Game 3. The Rainbows never got another chance as the Cardinal reeled off four straight points on the serving of Jeremy Bart and two of Gabe Gardner's 18 kills.

Stanford seized the momentum at the end of Game 4, turning an 11-10 deficit into a 15-11 win with five unanswered points. The Cardinal led, 12-10 in the rally scoring Game 5 but the Rainbows tied it at 12, 13 and 14.

A serving error by Gardner gave Hawaii a 15-14 lead and the Rainbows finished it off a minute later.

"It was deja vu after Game 2," Wilton said, referring to how his team lost Thursday after winning the first two games. "But the boys kept scrapping one point at a time."

Patrick Klein led the Cardinal (2-2, 1-2) with 34 kills.
