Honolulu has a
chefs’ special

Mug shot HONOLULU magazine publisher John Alves was pleased with David Paul's handling of the Hale 'Aina restaurant awards party Monday. "How would you like to cook for 70 of the state's top chefs?" Alves asked rhetorically. "David pulled it off with finesse and confidence." As John was thanking guests for attending the successful party, Polynesian Adventure Tours President Mike Carr recalled the mid-1970s when both of them were waiters at Matteo's. "John was a captain," Mike said. "He took orders and had first crack at all the girls." Another waiter was Rodney Kimura, now an attorney in the state Attorney General's office, Mike said. He added they "had tons of celebrities." The Eagles and Boz Scaggs came in together one night and Mike's tip was front-row tickets for the Eagles concert at Blaisdell Arena. John said, "Everyone snapped to when Sammy Davis Jr. came in and started passing out $100 bills." One night the manager told John to take good care of two women guests. John did, and also took them to Rex & Eric's after dinner. Cher was one of the women ...

Nora gets the picture

PROUD mama Nora Meijide took numerous photos at the party, many of them of her daughter, Candes Meijide Gentry, with guests. Candes has been selected Miss Oahu. She and other beauty queens -- Trini Kaopuiki, Trisha Fujikawa, Jolyn Camacho, Jenny Souza, Tricia Marciel, Auli'i Chung and Lani Stone Kaaa -- were part of the scene. Pianist Betty Loo Taylor, singer Kimberly Bradford and singer-guitarist Stan Albrecht played and sang at the event ...

FORMER Isle resident Erika Parham Jorgenson and husband, Yorg, from Minnesota, are wintering here. Erika's best gal pal here is Jany Cataldo. The Jorgensons celebrated New Year's Eve with Jany and others at the Halekulani. I wrote that at the party, Jany burst into song when Maestro Sam Wong asked the crowd to sing along with the Symphony. Jany, no professional singer, has since received calls asking her to sing at parties and karaoke bars from friends and strangers. Duh! Jany said designing pearl jewelry, not singing, is what she does for her supper ...

EDDIE and Myrna Kamae are rereleasing their first documentary, "LI'A: The Legacy of a Hawaiian Man. Sam Li'a was known as the songwriter of Waipio Valley. The film was premiered at the Hyatt Waikiki in November of 1988. When the hour-long work of art was over, there was hardly a dry eye in the ballroom. This treasure will be shown by KHON Jan. 31 at 9 p.m. ...

RYAN MANAUT, 12, despite a broken arm in a cast, was seated on the podium at the Pacific Club for an etiquette class Tuesday that featured a four-course dinner. About 45 people, including 10 kids, took the class. Now there's no chance Ryan, a Punahou sixth-grader, will be a bull in a china shop or in Mellow's Antiques, where his aunty, Laura Mellow, and mom, Kimberly Manaut, have many delicate Valentine's Day gifts on display ... John Travolta wins again in "A Civil Action." Robert Duvall scores big, too ... Hoku's first food festival of the year offers isle shellfish -- lobster, shrimp, opihi, oysters, crab and clams -- Feb. 1-5 at the Mandarin ...
