Once upon a time, schools didn't have computer technology or other "fancy gadgets" as learning aids. Instead, teachers relied on good old-fashioned books -- and their ability to engage student interest through the power of voice. A 'risk taker and innovator'
Upon reflection, 28-year teaching veteran Rachel Hirano recalled her early years in the teaching profession as challenging but fun. "When I look back, I think, 'Gee, how did we handle (that) back then?' "
For the last 26 years of her professional life, Hirano has been teaching at Pearl Ridge Elementary School. One of the school's first teachers, Hirano said she is enamored of the fifth grade, "where I feel most comfortable. All these years, and I finally found my niche in my teaching career."
Hirano continuously searches out new teaching methods and knowledge to share with students. Computers have become her friend, and math is a favorite subject.
School Principal Ray Sugai described Hirano as "a risk taker and innovator who displays a willingness to try new things ... the best possible example of what a lifelong learner should look like."
Hirano said it is her goal to ensure the progress of area students. To achieve this she actively participates in the Aiea Math Cadre, a group dedicated to seeing that students meet or surpass national math standards, and is grade-level chairwoman at Pearl Ridge.
