Pali roadwork now set
for March completion

When will the roadwork on the Pali Highway be completed? The signs posted by the state indicated it would be finished by October 1998.

While we were awaiting a response from the state Department of Transportation, the out-of-date October signs were removed last week, a spokeswoman said yesterday.

The Pali resurfacing project, which began in May 1998, is now scheduled to be completed in March. The delay was caused mostly by noise restrictions, which limited work hours, as well as project modifications.

The resurfacing was for both sides of the highway, between Country Club Road and the Pali Tunnel entrance. The work in the Honolulu-bound lanes has since been completed, but work continues Kailua-bound.

Can you warn your readers about another telemarketer who was calling about a celebrity sports event at the Blaisdell Arena on Feb. 3? Our organization, the Hawaii Police Athletic Federation and the Foundation for Athletes, is holding the Aloha Hoopfest that day. We bring in NFL players from the mainland, mostly retired, who play basketball against police officers.

"There apparently is some confusion, maybe deliberate or inadvertent, about which organization is sponsoring an event" that day, said Jo Ann Uchida, executive director of the state Office of Consumer Protection.

Her office is investigating "whether an actual misrepresentation is being made."

Meanwhile, Alvin Au, director of the city Department of Enterprise Services, confirmed that your organization is the only one booked for the arena on Feb. 3.

Uchida advised, "Anytime people are asked to contribute money, they should be absolutely clear as to what organization is involved, where the event is being held and what the event consists of."

If there is any doubt, she said consumers should call the organization directly -- not relying on the callers, who often are hired to make the calls.

If there is a question about the legitimacy of the calls or about the telemarketer, call the Office of Consumer Protection, 587-3222.

The Hawaii Police Athletic Federation's number is 951-6167.

I saw the photo of Gov. Cayetano and Marvelle Manga placing a maile lei on a bust and plaque of Martin Luther King Jr. Why were the bust and plaque both resting on the ground and not on a stand? Also, where can I see this bust?

The plaque has long been embedded into the concrete next to a replica of the Nagasaki Peace Bell, located on the grounds of City Hall, said Rick Peters of the Martin Luther King Holiday Coalition.

Since the plaque was on the ground, it was decided to place the bust next to it, he said.

The bust belongs to a friend of Peters' and is not available for public viewing.

To local charities who repeatedly call for donations. I know you keep calling because I have Caller ID. When you don't get an answer, you send a bill anyway, thanking me for my pledge. One charity called me over 100 times prior to Christmas selling trees and wreathes (you know who you are). Shame on you. I give from the heart when I can to whom I choose. -- Ray Cranage
