Star-BulletinJoe Siofele, a two-time all-state St. Louis School linebacker, will become the fourth Hawaii athlete since 1978 to be named to the Parade Magazine All-America High School Football Team.
The All-America issue will appear Sunday.
Siofele, who was the Star-Bulletin's 1998 defensive player of the year, is one of eight linebackers and 56 athletes from 27 states named to the elite team.
The first Hawaii resident to earn a berth on the Parade team was Wayne Apuna (1978), another St. Louis School product.
The other local selections were Punahou defensive lineman Jason Ching (1996) and Punahou offensive lineman Mike Souza (1997).
Siofele said the latest honor somewhat overwhelms him.
"I'm just a humble guy," he said.
A little more than a week ago, he was selected one of three linebackers on the inaugural Rivalnet All-America team, which will be honored at the Hooters Hula Bowl on Maui Jan. 24.
Siofele said he has yet to make up his mind about a college and is still considering all five of the schools he visited: Colorado, Washington, Arizona, Northwestern and Nebraska.
