PROVO, Utah -- The University of Hawaii women's basketball team found shooting the ball a chilling experience for the second consecutive Western Athletic Conference game.

The Wahine had their worst performance of the season from the free-throw line (8-of-15 for a .533 percentage) and their third worst outing from the field (20-of-51, .392) and from 3-point range (6-of-24, .250).

Combined with a season-high 24 turnovers (15 in the first half), it's perhaps surprising Hawaii only trailed, 46-44, with 13:38 remaining in the game.

However, the Brigham Young Cougars left their sloppy play on the bench for the last 10 minutes and pulled away for a 75-54 victory at the Marriott Center yesterday.

"What caught us by surprise is every time we've had a loss, this team has been resilient, but it didn't happen today," UH associate coach George Wolfe said. "As coaches, we have to prepare them better mentally."

Hawaii had some success early by going inside and drawing fouls, but didn't take full advantage at the free-throw line. And, when the Wahine's 3-pointers failed to connect, BYU (8-6 overall, 2-0 WAC) made its first run.

Lisa Osguthorpe broke an 11-all tie with her only bucket of the game with 12 minutes to go in the opening half. Over the next eight minutes, BYU outscored UH, 20-6, for a 31-17 lead.

But, the Wahine cut the deficit in half before intermission as freshman Karena Greeny and Aina Kohler each scored four points and Crystal Lee hit a 3-pointer.

The teams battled on even terms for the first nine minutes of the second half. Then, nursing a 52-48 lead with 10:42 to play, the Cougars put their power game in high gear and dominated to the end with a 23-6 finish.

It may be coincidence, but Lee, who had scored eight of her 11 points after intermission to help UH stay close, picked up two quick fouls and went to the bench with four as the Cougars began their run.

"They went inside exclusively. When you're trying to defend 6-3 and 6-4 inside with 5-11 and 5-11, it's difficult," UH head coach Vince Goo said. "We've got to do some recruiting. We didn't do it four years ago and three years ago and we get hurt now.

"I thought Crystal battled under the boards and had an outstanding performance. Aina showed a lot of courage out there."

Raylene Howard led UH with 17 points, but was limited to six in the second half. Lee had a game-high seven rebounds.

The Wahine play at Utah Sunday.
