Four qualify
for Sony Open

Chris Smith shot a 6-under-66 at the Pearl Country Club to head the four Monday qualifiers for the Sony Open in Hawaii, which starts Thursday at the Waialae Country Club.

Rory Sabbatini, Jason Schultz and Hawaii's Greg Meyer also qualified after a four-way playoff with Jeff Cook. Each shot a 68.

WE GOT FIELD: The University of Hawaii at Hilo will dedicate its new on-campus softball field Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. in a celebration called "We Got Field." A celebrity softball game will follow.

Tickets are $10 and will benefit the Vulcans' softball travel fund. The price includes the game, a barbecue lunch, a concert and the 1 p.m. baseball doubleheader between UHH and Sonoma State.

Tickets are available Sunday at the field, at the Vulcan men's basketball games Friday and Saturday or by calling 974-7703 (Big Island).

ALA WAI CHALLENGE: The 14th annual Ala Wai Challenge, in which company-sponsored teams compete in outrigger canoe races and ancient Hawaiian games, will take place Jan. 24.

The Challenge, which begins at 8:30 a.m. at Ala Wai Playground, is a fundraiser for the Waikiki Community Center. This year's event honors Hawaiian water sports legends James Koko, Turkey Love and Rell Sunn.
