All-America teamHe announced yesterday that 22 high school standouts, who are members of the inaugural Rivalnet All-America team, will be honored during the Jan. 24 college all-star game.
One of the stars is St. Louis School linebacker Joe Siofele. The 6-foot-2, 235-pounder told Rivalnet president Jim Heckman that he is considering Washington, Arizona, Colorado, Northwestern and Nebraska.
Siofele is one of three linebackers selected to the team that includes quarterback Chris Simms of Ramapo High School in Franklin Lakes, N.J. His father is former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms.
''While these 22 players represent high school football's elite players and future collegiate All-Americans, they are only the tip of the iceberg in terms of Rivalnet's recruiting data base, which is the most comprehensive ever created,'' Rivalnet President Jim Heckman said through a Hula Bowl release.
That database includes detailed information on about 2,000 college football prospects. Football fans can also find the top 100 players at each position and the top 100 overall players in the country.
''Fans can find out everything they want on the Internet,'' Klompus said. ''Their Internet site is http://www.gorival.net. We're very excited about having the players at our game in two weeks.''
It's possible that Rivalnet will become a major sponsor of the Hula Bowl. The Hooters contract runs out after this year. Klompus said that American Football Coaches Association executive director Grant Teaff favors many sponsors as opposed to only one.
