over UH-HiloIt was the Pacific West Conference opener for both teams. The Seasiders, who lost to the Vulcans earlier this season, improved to 7-6; Hilo dropped to 4-9.
Merriel Jenkins kept Hilo close in the early going, scoring 10 of his 15 points in the first seven minutes of the game. But the senior forward was plagued by foul trouble, sitting on the bench while BYU-Hawaii began to pull away with a 12-0 run early in the first half.
The Seasiders shot 68 percent in the first half to take a 48-41 lead at halftime. The Vulcans could get no closer in the second half.
Scott Prather led Hilo with 20 points. Earl Smith added 20 points for BYU-Hawaii.
The teams continue their PacWest season tonight. The Vulcans play Hawaii Pacific at the Blaisdell Arena. BYUH plays Chaminade at McCabe Gym.

NISHIMOTO PACES ISLE PROS: Dan Nishimoto won Thursday's stop on the Pro Tour Hawaii, pocketing the $2,500 first prize after shooting a 68 at the Hilo Municipal course.
Kevin Hayashi, Reynold Lee, Gregory Meyer and Henry Sieradski were one shot back, followed by Lance Taketa, who had a 71.

RUN WITH OLYMPIAN: Hawaii runners are invited to join 1996 Olympic steeplechase finalist and 1994 Waikiki Mile winner Marc Davis for a three- or five-mile run Wednesday at 6 p.m. at NikeTown in Waikiki.
Davis will conduct a clinic after the run, which begins at 6 p.m.
NikeTown is located at 2080 Kalakaua Avenue. Parking is $1 per hour in King Kalakaua Plaza.
KAMEHAMEHA FUN RUN-WALK: The Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate's annual fun run-walk to benefit the Aloha United Way will be held Saturday, Feb. 6.
The 10K run/walk will start at 7 a.m. in Kapiolani Park.
The entry fee is $20 if postmarked by Jan. 30, or $17 per person for groups of three or more registering together. Race day registration is $25.

SAFE BOATING LESSONS: A seven-session evening course in safe boating for skippers and would-be skippers will start Jan. 18 at the Waikiki Yacht Club.
